Non-surgical procedures
Specialized non-surgical care may include a detailed clinical and radiographic exam of your mouth, teeth, face, smile and jaws in order to obtain a precise diagnosis and treatment plan. A non-surgical approach to treat periodontal disease is always preferred if possible.
Scaling and root planing (with local anesthesia)
Initial periodontal therapy involves the subgingival removal of plaque and calculus under local anesthesia. This thorough debridement of the roots will reduce gingival inflammation and periodontal pockets, as well as provide a healthy environment for gingival healing. This is often the first step in the treatment of periodontal disease.
Periodontal hygiene maintenance
(scaling with or without local anesthesia)
It is possible that your dentist or periodontist recommends that regular dental cleanings and scalings be performed in alternating clinics. For susceptible patients, this will ensure that your periodontal health is maintained on the long term and that there is no recurrence of disease. These hygiene appointments may require local anesthesia to improve patient comfort.
